Singles
“Ur So Gay”
The first single, “Ur So Gay” was released late November 2007 and received mixed reviews and sparked some controversy. It was not meant to be the first single from the album, but instead a single for the EP with the same name, however, it ended up on this album.
“Thinking of You”
The second single, “Thinking of You” was a promotional single and was not promoted or sent for radio ads. It was released early April and its video surfaced the Internet in early May.
“I Kissed a Girl”
The third single, “I Kissed a Girl” proved more successful. It was released early May and soared up the charts. It hit number one in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Brazil, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. It also went to the Top Ten in Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, and Norway.
“Hot N Cold”
The fourth single, “Hot N Cold”, made it onto the chart after the album came out due to digital downloads. It was picked as the fourth single and was sent for radio adds on September 9.
Information and Critical Reception
Perry collaborated with notable producers Greg Wells, Dr. Luke, Dave Stewart, Max Martin among others on the album. The album took over 5 years to make due to the label not knowing how to market Katy.
Reaction by critics has been mixed to negative. While Kerri Mason of Billboard Magazine gave the album a positive review, stating “a debut album [has never] been so packed with potential hits”, other sources such as Allmusic and Rolling Stone each gave it 2 out of 5 stars. According to review-aggregating website Metacritic, the album’s average rating among critics is 42 out of 100, a score that has earned it the distinction of the second worst-reviewed album of 2008 to date as well as a space on the site’s “Bottom 100″ Albums.
